In 1971, Aretha Franklin, the undisputed Queen of Soul, brought producer Jerry Wexler, her backup singers, and the legendary Atlantic Records rhythm section to The New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles to record an album of gospel music before an enthusiastic live audience. The result, “Amazing Grace”, went on to become one of the biggest albums of Aretha Franklin’s career and one of her most beloved works. But even as the album gained fans around the world, few realized that those inspirational sessions had not only been recorded, they had been filmed by a camera crew led by Oscar winning filmmaker Sydney Pollack. Pollack and his team spent two nights capturing Franklin at the height of her powers, as she thrilled a shouting and dancing audience that included Franklin’s father, Reverend C.L. Franklin, gospel legends Clara Ward and Mother Ward of the Ward Family Singers, Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts, and the members of The New Temple Missionary Baptist Church. But due to technical problems the film has never been seen. Until now. No one who loves music will want to miss this thrilling film, which is both an extraordinary look at a key moment in American musical and social history, and an invaluable record of one of America’s greatest artists doing what she did best.

Trash Film Night presents Birdemic: Shock & Terror

Trash Film Night presents Birdemic: Shock & Terror

1818

The last time Birmingham saw Trash Film Night hosts Luke and David, they were trapped on board a canal boat with Shark Attack 3 playing on a big telly and no chance of escape. They hadn't been seen since...until now.

This June, Trash Film Night makes a triumphant/lacklustre (delete as applicable) return at a brand new venue – Digbeth’s Mockingbird Cinema. And to celebrate the fact that another cinema has decided to risk their audience’s sanity by exposing them to a selection of painfully bad films, we’re dusting off a Trash Film Night favourite – bad film disasterpiece Birdemic: Shock & Terror.

Birdemic was the brainchild of writer-director James Nguyen, a man who had never made a movie before, but wanted to pay tribute to Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. The result is a cinematic travesty riddled with bad lighting, terrible acting and some of the worst special effects you’ll ever have the misfortune to see. It’s a true wonder of the modern age.

As ever, the night will be hosted by Trash Film Night hosts Luke and David, who will be providing live commentary during the film – so if you want to watch the film in respectful silence, you are most certainly in the wrong place.

VAN GOGH & JAPAN

VAN GOGH & JAPAN

U

“I envy the Japanese” Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. In the exhibition on which this film is based – VAN GOGH & JAPAN at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam – one can see why. Though Vincent van Gogh never visited Japan it is the country that had the most profound influence on him and his art.

One cannot understand Van Gogh without understanding how Japanese art arrived in Paris in the middle of the 19th century and the profound impact it had on artists like Monet, Degas and, above all, Van Gogh. Visiting the new galleries of Japanese art in Paris and thrn creating his own image of Japan – through in-depth research, print collecting and detailed discussions with other artists – Van Gogh’s encounter with Japanese artworks gave his work a new and exciting direction.

After leaving Paris for the south of France – to what he thought of as near to a kind of Japan as he could find – the productive and yet troubled years that followed must all be seen in the context of Van Gogh bending Japanese influences to his will and defining himself as a modern artist with clear Asian precursors.

In this little known story of Van Gogh’s art we see just how important his study of Japan was. The film travels not only to France and the Netherlands but also to Japan to further explore the remarkable heritage that so affected Van Gogh and made him the artist we know of today.
