12Adistressing scenes, threat, bloody images

From Ground Zero is a compelling project that brings together 22 short films created by talented filmmakers from Gaza. Launched by Rashid Masharawi, a renowned Palestinian filmmaker, the initiative was born against the backdrop of conflict and aims to provide a platform for young artists to express themselves through their craft. Each film, ranging in length from 3 to 6 minutes, presents a unique perspective on the current reality in Gaza. The project captures the diverse experiences of life in the Palestinian enclave, including the challenges, tragedies and moments of resilience faced by its people. Despite the harsh filming conditions, Gaza's vibrant artistic scene shines through this collection, offering an intimate and powerful portrait of daily life and the enduring spirit of its people. Kino is delighted that two guests will join for a special Q&A after the screening: Dr Felicity Laurence has worked on many occasions since 1991 as an international children’s choral specialist with both Palestinian and Israeli children. In 2009, she began visiting The Villages Group, a small, deeply committed Israeli-Palestinian peace project. Her musical work with children in this project took her into many of the villages in Masafer Yatta, the subject of the recent Oscar-winning documentary, No Other Land. Her colleague Mohammad Maragha, of the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, has been running teams of music teachers in Gaza who even now gather children in the rubble when they can, to do a little music in the face of the ongoing destruction of their lives. Felicity and Mohammad are currently writing together an article about musicking as a way of retaining humanity in the face of catastrophic dehumanisation. Katy Colley has been the Chair of the Hastings & District Palestine Solidarity Campaign since 2018. Describing herself as ‘an Anti-Zionist Jew’ she is also a founding member of Hastings Jews for Justice which was started in 2024 to provide a Jewish voice, space and community to local Jews, and those of Jewish heritage, standing in opposition to Israel's occupation, apartheid and genocide in Palestine. Israel was found guilty of the crime of apartheid by the International Court of Justice in September 2024 and currently stands in the dock at the world court for genocide, a charge backed by UN experts, genocide scholars and human rights organizations including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and B’Tselem. Katy is a ghostwriter by profession and runs a local campsite with her husband Phil.
